Who we are

My desire to cover music culture and news is rooted from my families’ Sonidero background. Sonideros are Mexican DJs with the signature-style of giving shouts-outs (or MCing) over music. As a middle schooler, I helped my Sonidero-uncles set up audio equipment at gigs around the city. A role I have learned to appreciate over the years. As the first in my family to be born in L.A., I felt the importance ‘salsas, cumbias, and shout-outs’ were in bridging Puebla to our homes. 

The name “There Radio” comes from a spelling bee competition I lost in the 2nd grade. I misspelled “their”, and spelled “there” instead. Two different words about belonging. This platform is about locality, belonging, and highlighting stories that bridge and define Los Angeles. – Tony
